What is Blackjack Basic Strategy?
Blackjack Basic Strategy represents mathematically optimal decisions for every possible hand combination a player might face. Developed through computer analysis of millions of hands, this strategy reduces the house edge to approximately 0.5%, compared to 2-4% for casual players making intuitive decisions.
The strategy accounts for the dealer's up card, your total hand value, and whether your hand is soft (contains an Ace counted as 11) or hard (all Aces counted as 1). By following these guidelines consistently, players make the statistically best decision in each situation, regardless of short-term outcomes.
Core Decision Categories
Hard Hands: When your hand has no Ace or the Ace must be counted as 1. For totals of 12-16, the decision heavily depends on the dealer's up card. Against dealer's 2-6, standing is typically correct. Against 7 or higher, hitting is usually optimal.
Soft Hands: Containing an Ace counted as 11. These hands cannot bust with a hit, allowing more aggressive play. Soft 18 is frequently doubled against weak dealer cards (3-6). Soft hands of 13-17 benefit from doubling when the dealer shows vulnerable cards.
Pair Splitting: Basic strategy dictates always splitting Aces and Eights, never splitting Tens or Fives, and splitting other pairs based on dealer up card. Splitting creates two separate hands with independent chances of winning.
Doubling Down: This strategic bet doubling requires understanding when your odds justify risking additional money. Hard 11 versus dealer 2-10 is nearly always correct to double, as is hard 10 against 2-9.
